facilities. Additionally, Porterville City leaders were willing to draft a suitable lease for the land adjacent to the airport on which the project was built. The site was selected because it offered suitable land near distribution circuits that could support a large amount of solar power without the need for major upgrades.
The ground-mounted Porterville solar power plant is located at the southern end of California’s Central Valley, a predominately agricultural region. The project is California’s largest investor-owned utility photovoltaic (PV) plant and the first ground-mount installation operating under the utility’s Solar Photovoltaic Program (SPVP). The project covers 32 acres of land and generates as many as 5 million watts (AC) of renewable energy, enough to serve the daytime power needs of 3,250 average homes.
